How to Make a Treasure/Jewelry Box with Popsicle Sticks

Children love to find things while walking around the neighborhood, in the park, or around the house. Often they want to place their found treasures in a special box. Teach them how to make a treasure/jewelry box with Popsicle sticks and they’ll have something where they can save all their special items.

There are a couple of ways your child can make a treasure or jewelry box. Here’s one that’s relatively simple and makes a nice sized box for small trinkets. You’ll need the following items:

* Newspaper to cover your work area
* One package of Popsicle sticks (any color, a combination of colors, or plain to paint)
* White craft or school glue
* Paint (if necessary)
* 5 large wooden beads
* Additional decorations

Start by finding a work space that can remain in use until the treasure/jewelry box is completed.

If you’re painting your Popsicle sticks, you may want to do this step first. Paint one side of the sticks at a time, allowing them to dry completely before painting the other side. If you’re using pre-colored sticks, you can skip this step.

Line up 9 Popsicle sticks next to each other, making sure they touch. Place two sticks along the width of the 9 to secure them together – one across the top and one across the bottom of the group of sticks. This will be the base.

Repeat the above to make the top of the box, but place the horizontal sticks more toward the center of the box. This will allow the box to close and the lid will fit better.

Go back to the base and begin gluing a stick across the top and the bottom. Then place and glue sticks going vertically along the sides. Alternate gluing sticks along the top and bottom and then along the sides until the box is as tall as they’d like it to be. Six to eight layers is a good choice but your child can make their box as tall as they like depending upon what they want to put in it. Finish with vertical sticks on the bottom and horizontal sticks on the top so the lid will fit.

If your child hasn’t already painted their box, they still can at this point. However, they’ll want to allow the box to dry completely before they begin further decorations. They can use found items such as small rocks, feathers, shells, or they can use stickers, sea glass, or plastic gems. Glue a large wooden bead in the center for the handle and one at each corner to give the box legs.

Children love having special places to hold their treasures. It will be even more special if they learn how to make a treasure/jewelry box with Popsicle sticks for themselves. They can also give these boxes to loved ones as a gift.
