How to Save Money on Organic Makeup Brands

Organic makeup and personal products are better for us and better for the environment than ordinary brands. But we all know they cost a lot more, too. What’s a budget-strapped, frugal Mom to do?

If you’re committed to using non-toxic, natural products, there are ways to make your money go a little farther. Here are some of my tips.

3 Ways You Can Afford Organic Makeup Brands

1. Shop sales

Vendors and stores have sales all the time. Keep an eye out for these. Sign up for your favorite store’s newsletter to receive advance notice of upcoming sales and even exclusive coupons. For example, if you sign up for my free green living report here, you’ll get emails about weekly specials in my Alex+Von store.

2. Multi-task

Invest in products that perform at least two tasks at once. For example, my 100% Pure Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 20 easily replaces three products: moisturizer, foundation, and sun screen. Plus, because 100% Pure products are made from plant-based ingredients and therefore full of anti-oxidants, this product plays a fourth role: skin treatment.

Another example of a multi-tasking product is the Lip and Cheek Tint. Aside from making both your cheeks and lips rosy, it moisturizes lips and cheeks, and is a form of skin treatment as well:

3. Make products last longer

You can also save money by making products go farther. For example, apply foundation only where you need it. Transfer liquid products into foam dispensers. These dispensers suspend the liquid product into air, creating foam. With most liquid products, you combine them with equal parts water into the foam dispenser. This makes them last much longer.

100% Pure’s body and facial cleansing foam already come in foam dispensers, and they’re highly concentrated — not diluted in water (check the ingredients of your store-bought shampoo. The first ingredient is probably water) — so you need to use a smaller amount to get results.

Bonus Tip:

Here’s another way to save money while buying organic skincare products: stick to the essentials. For example, do you really need to use a toner after washing your face? An effective cleanser will do the trick of getting your face clean without stripping it of moisture. Also, if you’re already using foundation with moderate to heavy coverage, do you really need concealer on top of that? A good foundation can cover up dark undereye circles and most blemishes.

Ordinary personal care products and makeup will always be cheaper than their toxin-free, organic counterparts. And it will remain that way for a long time to come.

In the meantime, we don’t have to drive our families to the poor house just to avoid toxic ingredients. Begin by transitioning to non-toxic products you use on your body every day, such as soap, shampoo, and lotion. If you have a skin condition, like eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea, invest in one or two products to address those.

Every little bit you do helps reduce your exposure to toxins. Every purchase is also a way of voting with your wallet, letting manufacturers know there is a demand for products that are as safe and as natural as possible.

Take the first step today, and do a little bit more when you’re able. This is not an all-or-nothing affair. Nobody’s judging you, much less should you judge yourself.
