There are some pretty disturbing consequences that come from the use of herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers on our plants and crops, or to eliminate bugs. For the moment, let’s ignore the fact that most pest killers attack both good and bad bugs, bacteria and fungi. Yes, bacteria and fungi… both form an essential part of what is in our soil… and without it our soil will not promote growth of our plants.

Instead, let’s focus on the fact that the more we use synthetic chemicals to promote improved plant growth, the more of these chemicals… weed killers, bug killers, and enhanced plant food…the more is retained in our soil and in our water. These chemicals, many of which will not readily dissolve or break down, build up and due to interesting chemical reactions sometimes (often in fact) they multiply their effect due to interactions with other chemicals or natural elements in the soil.

So the toxins build up, the nitrates saturate, the chemicals mix…make new chemicals…some much more toxic than the original dangerous chemicals… and when they get into our food chain we take them in…and they store themselves in our fatty tissues…often thousands of times stronger than the initial dose rate than was sprayed on our crops… and they stick around.

Who is supposed to keep these things from being dangerous to humans? Turns out… especially here in the US… no one…we leave it to the Chemical Companies who manufacture these herbicides, pesticides, anti-fungials, and fertilizers… who make millions of pounds of these treatments for use in our agribusiness. It isn’t until someone at CDC or EPA discovers or is notified of contaminant interactions that might cause health problems that they begin the process of proving that there is or isn’t an issue.

These same manufacturers are the same ones who are declaring that the EPA is bad for our economy. What biologists have identified is that these chemicals literally change how our bodies act. They attach themselves to different organs, simulate hormones, and promote delayed development for some, and promote rapid development in others.

They also impact cancer… the abnormal growth of cells in our bodies…due to how our bodies react to their inclusion in our diets… here is just one example:

Breast cancer, which was extremely rare back in
1900…and only affecting 58 out of 100,000 women in 1949, now
strikes 1 in 3 women in the US.
That means that in just 55
short years, it has gone up 568 times what it was.

What can we do? Get out there and talk to others, read on the topic, demand that your state and federal representatives support STATE and FEDERAL EPA and Agricultural Departments to ensure that we are getting safer…with every application, every spray initiated. Pass laws that will keep us safe…and keep our water, air, and soil getting cleaner every year!
