Earth Day Celebration Ideas

There?s only one earth in the whole universe and it?s up to those living here to take care of it. That?s the idea behind Earth Day Celebrations. Each year millions of people find ways to take better care of the planet and these Earth Day celebration ideas will give you ample opportunities to show how much you care about the planet on which we live.

Earth Day celebrations can be found throughout the country and across the world. Look in your local newspaper or watch local television programs to see what is available where you live. If there aren?t any Earth Day celebrations, why not start some in your own community?

Waterways

Walk along the rivers, lakes, streams or beaches near your home. Pick up any trash along the waterways. Don?t go into the water as you may not be able to see sharp objects or drop-offs. For items which are floating in the water, you may want to use a long stick or net. Gather items in garbage bags and then toss the bags in a dumpster.

Hiking Trails

Take a hike along the trails at a local park. Pick up trash and make note of any graffiti. With the park?s permission, go back and paint over the graffiti with Earth Day slogans or paintings.

Local Foods and Farms

Invite local farmers to set up a booth with locally grown produce. You can also suggest that other farmers set up a display to discuss their earth-friendly farming methods. Some may grow their crops organically (meaning no chemicals). Others may use manure from their cows to fuel their farm. You can find local organic farmers by going to https://www.localharvest.org/organic-farms/ and searching for your state.

Plant Trees

Learn about which trees are indigenous to your area. Talk with your local park service and donate a tree or two. You could also ask to donate indigenous trees to your child?s school or plant them in your own yard.

Hazardous Waste Collection

Talk to the city or county to find out how to properly dispose of hazardous household waste. Chemicals, paint, used motor oil, batteries and solvents improperly disposed of can damage the water table and the soil. Ask them to coordinate the collection of these items. It may be an expensive task but it is so worthwhile.

Recycle

If your community doesn?t already do so, ask about starting a recycling program. Your city or county officials should be able to let you know what is available in your area. Start a petition and ask your neighbors to sign it to get a recycling center going.

Seedling Giveaway

Most people find unwanted tree seedlings in their garden or lawn in the springtime. Ask them to dig them up and take them to the local farmer?s market. Get a corporate sponsor to help defray the cost of printing up flyers. Anyone who wants the seedlings can go get them. You can donate any seedlings that aren?t given away to the local park.

These Earth Day celebration ideas are far from being all-inclusive. There are so many ways you can celebrate Earth Day; this list barely scratched the surface. Think about the things you enjoy and try to come up with ideas associated with that. No matter what you choose to do, remember there?s only one earth and it takes everyone to keep it clean.
